Horseback Riding Tips for Beginners

Before becoming a managing director for a financial institution in Santa Barbara, California, Brett Grimes also served as the senior vice president and executive director of Morgan Stanley and UBS. Away from his work, Brett Grimes enjoys various hobbies such as horseback riding.

Here are a few things that every novice horse rider should consider before they begin riding:

1. Get a good instructor. A good instructor is willing to answer questions from riders, no matter the level of training. Thoroughly communicating with the instructor can help riders understand all the basics. A horse instructor should train riders to recognize a horse’s body language and what it means. This helps riders avoid injuries.

2. How to tack up a horse. Every rider should be familiar with different tack pieces, such as the bridle, saddle pad, girth, and saddle. Each of these pieces has specific rules concerning its placement on a horse.

3. Groundwork skills. Groundwork with a horse involves exercises that a rider performs with the horse while on the ground. For example, the rider can lead the horse with a cavesson bridle, halter, or neck rope. Groundwork is essential as it helps improve the bond between a rider and the horse.
